Common Causes of Flat Feet

Dr. Mark Moss is your podiatrist at Coastal Foot & Ankle in Houston, and Pearland, TX. We see many patients who have flat feet and deal with associated pains, so if you're struggling with complications due to flat feet, keep reading and call us for an appointment today.

What Are Flat Feet?

If you have flat feet, it means there is little to no arch in the middle of the foot, or that you have 'fallen arches'. The arch of your foot may be flat to the floor when you stand. Flat feet are normal in babies and toddlers before the arch develops. If you never develop strong arches or the arch collapses over time, flat feet can lead to pain and complications in your feet, legs, and even lower back.

What Causes Flat Feet?

Flat feet can be genetic so if your parents had flat feet, you are more likely to have flat feet. Flat feet are more common as you age, and in people who have arthritis, diabetes, obesity, or nerve damage. A weak Achilles tendon or injuries to tendons in your feet can also cause your arches to collapse.

What Can I Do About Flat Feet?

Some patients have flat feet but don't experience complications, and others need treatment because they cause pain and problems in the ankles, knees, and hips. Your podiatrist will evaluate your feet and ankles, and examine your shoes and gait to determine the level of treatment you need. Our doctor may recommend:

  • Physical therapy to strengthen the feet
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises to do on your own
  • Custom foot orthotics to provide extra support for your arch and reduce pain as you walk
