If you’ve ever stepped out of bed and felt a sharp, stabbing pain in your heel, you’re not alone—and you’re not imagining it. Morning heel pain is one of the most common foot complaints, and while it can have a few causes, it often points to a condition that needs professional care.
At Coastal Foot and Ankle Associates, serving Houston and Pearland, TX, our experienced podiatrists help patients pinpoint the cause of heel pain and get back to walking comfortably—without the daily discomfort.
By far, the leading cause of morning heel pain is plantar fasciitis—an inflammation of the thick band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone to your toes.
When you sleep, that tissue tightens up. So, when you take your first steps in the morning, it stretches suddenly, often causing intense heel pain that may ease as you walk more but return later in the day.
While plantar fasciitis is the most common, there are other reasons your heel might hurt first thing in the morning:
Each condition has distinct features, but professional evaluation is the only way to know for sure.
If your heel pain lasts more than a few days, keeps coming back, or interferes with daily activities, it’s time to get it checked. Early treatment often prevents the pain from becoming chronic or more severe.
At Coastal Foot and Ankle Associates, we’ll start with a detailed exam and imaging if needed, then create a treatment plan that may include:
No one should have to start their day in pain. Whether it’s plantar fasciitis or something more complex, our team is here to help you walk comfortably again.
