Heel pain can make even the shortest distances, like from your home to your car, very uncomfortable to navigate. If walking or running is heel painpart of your exercise regimen, it can sideline you from keeping up with your health. That's why at Coastal Foot & Ankle Associates in Pearland and Houston, TX, our podiatrists - Dr. Hina Hassan and Dr. Mark Moss - want to help their patients by diagnosing their heel pain and putting an end to that cycle so they can continue with their lives as normal.

What causes heel pain?

Heel pain is often caused by overuse of the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the foot. People whose jobs require constant standing or walking are at risk, particularly women who wear heels as part of their wardrobe or people who do not wear properly padded shoes. Suddenly adopting a new or more strenuous exercise program, in particular running, is also a common cause of heel pain seen at your Pearland and Houston podiatrist's office. In these cases, the Achilles tendon or the plantar fascia (the tendon near the bottom of the foot) are usually affected. Bursitis, gout, arthritis and fractures may also be to blame.

How is heel pain treated?

At Coastal Foot & Ankle Associates, our podiatrists start with a consultation, which includes a thorough examination of your foot and an evaluation of your medical history. From there, the most conservative treatments are attempted first: rest, analgesics for pain, ice or heat therapy and shoe inserts. If heel pain symptoms aren't relieved by these methods, other treatments like physical therapy, steroid injections, custom orthotics to wear inside the shoes or shockwave therapy may be employed. Surgery is typically the last resort and is most commonly used for persistent plantar fasciitis.
