Does your bunion make walking or standing difficult? Our Pearland and Houston, TX, podiatrist Dr. Mark Moss shares a few tips that will bunionshelp ease your bunion pain.

Protect your bunion

A little padding will reduce pressure on your bunion when you wear shoes. Adhesive pads, available in the foot care aisle of Houston and Pearland drug stores, offer a low-cost, low-tech way to relieve bunion pain. The pads can also cushion corns that may develop on your toes as a result of your bunions.

Change your habits

High heels or tight shoes can worsen bunions and should be avoided. During your next shopping trip, look for shoes that offer extra room in the toe area and also provide plenty of cushioning. Reducing the amount of time you spend on your feet can also help you keep your pain under control. If you teach or work in sales or another occupation that requires frequent standing, you may benefit from using a stool. Anything you can do to reduce pressure on your feet will be helpful.

Visit the podiatrist

Bunions won't go away on their own, but your podiatrist can help you prevent them from worsening. During your visit to our Pearland or Houston office, we may recommend night splints that will improve the alignment of your toes while you sleep and custom-made orthotics. Orthotics are shoe inserts that reposition your foot and help reduce pain.

Physical therapy, ultrasound treatment or cortisone injections may also be helpful. If conservative methods don't reduce your pain, or your bunions worsen, you may benefit from surgery. The extent of your surgery will depend on the severity of your condition but may involve removing bone and tissue and realigning the joints, muscles and tendons in your foot.

Don't let bunion pain keep you off your feet. Schedule an appointment with our podiatrist by calling (281) 484-2400 for the Houston office or (281) 485-2988 for the Pearland office.
